Apart from having its Head Office at Dar es Salaam, Tanganyika Law Society has a total of 21 (twenty one Chapters. TLS chapters are established by the Tanganyika Law Society (Chapter and Chapter Zones Regulations, 2020). Chapters are clustered in seven zones as shown in the below matrix:

As per the law, for any region or district of mainland Tanzania qualifies to be a chapter if it has thirty five or more advocates having business in the said region or district, and a High Court Registry in the region.
Objects of Chapters is to serve as branches of the Society and in doing so, Chapters in consultation with Council through Zonal Executive Committees address issues of legal practice and welfare of membership in chapters, implement the objects of the society at Chapter level as may be determined or directed by the council; and inform the council of any matter that affects members in the chapter for council’s consideration                  
Functions of chapters are:
  1. To coordinate members of the society at Chapter level
  2. Convene and conduct meetings of members at Chapter Level
  • Implement activities of the Society at Chapter Level
  1. Link the society with other stakeholders at Chapter Level
  2. Promote the administration of Justice at Chapter Level
  3. Protect the embers of the public in matters relating to practice of law
  • Facilitate the acquisition of legal education and knowledge by members of Chapters in accordance with continuing Legal education Regulations
  • Upholds standards of professional practice and ethical conduct
  1. Represent, protect and assist members of the society in matters relating to conditions of practice and welfare
  2. Raise and manage funds to run the affairs of chapters
  3. Perform any other functions as may be directed.
Roles of Chapter Zones:
  1. To ensure proper governance and Management of affairs of the Chapters within the respective Chapter Zone
  2. Enhancing Coordination of Chapters within the respective Chapter Zone
  • Enhancing equitable representation of chapter Zone Members in all its decision making Organs
CHAPTER AND CHAPTER ZONES GOVERNANCE
            Chapter Governance:
  1. Chapter Executive Committee.
Every Chapter has the Executive Committee which consists of:
  1. Chapter Convenor who is the chairperson
  2. Vice Chapter Convenor
  • Chapter Treasurer
  1. Chair persons of Chapter Ethics, CLE, and Probono Committees
  2. One member appointed from amongst members of the Chapter.
The functions of Chapter Executive Committee among others is to ensure the roles and functions of the Chapter are properly carried out.
  1. Chapter Committees:
Every Chapter has the Ethics Committee, Continuing Legal Education Committee, Probono Committee and Members Welfare Committee.
 
  1. Chapter Secretariat:
Every Chapter has a Chapter Secretariat. Chapter Secretariat is headed by Chapter Officer Incharge who is an employee of the Society. Chapter Officers Incharge are responsible to administer the general affairs of the Chapter, advise and assist the Chapter Executive Committee and all chapter Committee
 
Chapter Zone Governance:
Chapter Zone Governance Consists of the following:
  1. Zonal Executive Committee: this Committee consists of The Zonal Leader who is the chairperson , chapter Conveners of the respective chapter zone, one senior representative of the Chapter zone, one young lawyer representative of the chapter zone, one female lawyer representative of the chapter zone, one member with disability representative of the chapter zone
Functions of the Zonal Executive Committee are:
  1. To ensure that the roles and functions of chapters within the chapter zones are properly carried
  2. To oversee the implementation of the Societies Business plan and strategic plan in their respective Chapter Zone,
  • Ensuring that the directives from the council are carried out in their respective Chapter zone
  1. Preparing chapter zone quarterly meetings and annual reports to be dully submitted to the council
  2. Conducting Chapter Zone annual meeting
  3. Presenting chapter zone annual narrative and financial reports to the Zonal Annual meeting.
Usually, Zonal leader is the head of the respective Chapter and a council member of the Society.
  1. Chapter Zone Secretariat:
In every Zone, there is Chapter Zone Secretariat which is responsible for coordination of all chapters within the respective Chapter Zone. Chapter Zone Secretariat is headed by the Zonal Officer Incharge who is also an employee of the Society.
Zonal Officer Incharge is responsible for administering all general affairs of the Zone and also the secretary if the Zonal Executive Committee.
