| Conference Theme Corruption is a supranational threat, which impacts every nation, but some to a much greater degree than others. It represents the theft of riches and resources which are the rightful property of citizens and nations. Its impact disproportionately affects the vulnerable, women, and children, who suffer from the lack of adequate education, health, and the basic amenities of life. The effect of corruption is to undermine confidence in the institutions of the state, corporations, and ultimately, the Rule of Law. In 2003, the nations of the world adopted the United Nations Convention Against Corruption, the first and only global initiative to combat this scourge. Twenty years later, questions are being asked – is corruption on the decline, has the human condition changed for the better, or is any progress illusory? A former South African Constitutional Court judge recently referred to corruption as South Africa’s “deadly cancer”, seeping “into almost every aspect of our lives, on numerous levels, by everyone against everyone”. Professionals in all spheres of the criminal justice system have a role to play in combatting corruption, whether they be police officers, prosecutors, defence counsel, judges, or correctional officers. They and all who toil within the justice system have a dual role, to ensure that the rule of law prevails and that they are personally above reproach. Corruption is the focus of an international conference, being hosted in Cape Town by the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. The conference brings together members of all branches of the criminal justice system and provides a platform to share challenges, experiences, and best practices, including restorative justice. In bringing together a wide range of expertise from South Africa, the African continent, and the rest of the world, the conference allows the Society to continue in its mission to bring needed reforms to criminal law and criminal justice systems, thereby creating a more equitable and just society for all citizens of the world. Presentation Proposals To advance the themes of the conference, the Society invites persons interested in presenting a paper, participating in a plenary or workshop, or who wish to propose a workshop to submit a short abstract or workshop concept for consideration by the organizing committee. The ISRCL encourages diversity in the call for proposals, including encouraging the submission of proposals from regions other than North America. Publications and Papers The Society, in association with Springer Publishing, publishes Criminal Law Forum, a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the advancement of criminal law theory, practice, and reform throughout the world. Criminal Law Forum publishes original contributions and documents of interest to criminal law scholars and practitioners. All members receive Criminal Law Forum. Where the authors have permitted us to do so, conference papers from past conferences are published on the Society’s website www.isrcl.com. |
