Tanganyika Law Society Council

The TLS Council is the governing board and an execution machinery of the Law Society responsible for governance of the Society and overseer of the implementation of the Annual General Meeting, General Meetings and its Resolutions done by the Management and Secretariat of the Society.

Before amendment of the Tanganyika Law Society Act Cap 307 of 2020, number of Council members was 10 and all members of the council were elected by all members of the Society during the Society General Elections which was conducted annually and the tenure of office for council members was a term of one year and members were eligible for re-election for one further term.

After amendment of the Act of the year 2020, the Council is now consisting of eleven members who are President, Vice President, Honorary Treasurer and eight other members, all of whom are members of the Society duly elected during the Society’s General Election conducted annually.

All members of the Society elect the President, Vice President and Honorary Treasurer while the other eight members consist of seven Zonal leaders who are elected by members of their respective zones; and one chairperson of young Lawyers elected by young lawyers through the Association of Young Lawyers of the Law Society.

Council members serve in the Council of the Society for a term of one year and eligible for re-election for one further term.

The Tanganyika Law Society Act Cap 307 provides for the roles and powers of the Council which are to exercise all powers of governance for and on behalf of the Annual General Meeting; govern the affairs of the Society; establish chapters and chapter zones; employ the Executive Director of the Society; approve the Society strategic plans, action plans and budget of the Society; oversee the implementation of the Society’s strategic initiatives and its functioning within the agreed framework, in accordance with relevant statutory and regulatory structures; ensure the adequacy of financial, operational systems and internal controls; ensure the implementation of corporate ethics and the Code of Conduct; convene Annual General Meetings; and perform any other duty in relation to the affairs of the Society.
