ILFA Elevate 2020

Following the success of the Elevate in house counsel forum in Lagos earlier this year, ILFA will now organise a follow-up event in Nairobi in February 2020. Please see attached a save the date flyer and see below details on the website. The Elevate 2020 programme will be targeted at both corporate counsel and government lawyers. We hope you will participate and share details with others. The nature of the forum means that we will limit the number of external law firms that can be involved. Please do let me know if the event is of interest in which case I can share further information.

Finally, by way of reminder, the ILFA Fundraising Gala Dinner will take place next Thursday (28th November 2019) at the UK Law Society. This year the event is themed the ILFA Ankara Ball. We have a handful of tickets remaining for anyone that wishes to attend. For those who cannot attend, we would encourage you to either sponsor the attendance of someone else and/or support ILFA’s fundraising efforts by making a charitable donation. Please see links below either for purchasing a ticket, sponsoring the event or donating to ILFA. Without such funding support, ILFA would not be able to function or to continue to extend legal capacity across Africa. We particularly urge those firms and organisations whose lawyers have benefitted from ILFA’s programmes to consider making a donation to help ensure other lawyers can continue to benefit from the work that ILFA is doing. Your support would be very welcome.

CALL FOR COMMENTS ON THE TANGANYIKA LAW SOCIETY BILL

Reference is made to the Written Laws ( Miscellaneous Amendments) (No.8) Act of 2019 which, among other things, has amended the Tanganyika Law Society Act, Cap. 307.

The Governing Council convened its 4th Extra-Ordinary Meeting to deliberate on the effects of the proposed amendments to the TLS. In that effect, the Governing Council is of the opinion that there are some provisions in the proposed amendments which are detrimental to the Society particularly on the issue of AGM by way of representation (see sections 57(3) of the Miscellaneous Amendment No. 8 of 2019; the manner of conducting General elections (see section 52 (1) of the Miscellaneous Amendment No. 8 of 2019); the Tenure of the Governing Council (see sections52(5) of the Miscellaneous Amendment No. 8 of 2019); and the requirement for removal of the Executive Director from the office (see sections see sections 56(8) and 56 (9) of the Miscellaneous Amendment No. 8 of 2019).

The Governing Council resolved, among other things, to call for comments from all members in respect of the said TLS Bill so as to prepare the TLS comments on the Bill and further communicate the same to the Ministry of the Constitution and Legal Affairs and Parliamentary Committee for Constitution and Legal Affairs.

By this email, you are all requested to read the attached Written Laws ( Miscellaneous Amendments) (No.8) Act of 2019 particularly on amendments of the TLS Act and send us your comments via tlsbill@tls.or.tz on or before Monday, 24th November 2019.

Your comments will then be compiled by the TLS Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee and finally, the TLS comments on the said Bill will be prepared and approved by the Council for further action.
